*Note: Shiki (translated as “corpse-demon”) is the canon name for vampires.
In the words of Natsuno himself: ”I know I don’t have a likeable personality”. He’s quiet, aloof and resents just about everything in his life: his parents' attitude (unmarried hipsters who seem to enjoy defying social norms), his girly first name and most of all Sotoba, the small backwater village he was forced to move to. He despises the villagers’ nosiness and the way they force their expectations on others with no regards to their wishes. Planning to leave as soon as he has the chance, Natsuno makes a point of not integrating in Sotoba - even his relationship with Tohru, who eventually becomes Natsuno’s best friend and the one he cares about the most, started because Tohru was too stubborn and Natsuno was too apathetic to keep pushing him away.
He ignores most things around him, and tends to come off as cold and rude when he does interact with others. He’s very blunt and seems to care little for people’s feelings. Natsuno is the kind of person who bluntly refuses to accept a dead girl’s memento on said girl’s funeral and then ditches the burial because “it’s too hot outside”. Sure, she used to stalk him and he had good reasons to dislike her, but most people would show a bit more restraint considering the circumstances. Tact? Basic social etiquette? Half the village watching you act like a complete ass? Natsuno couldn’t care less.
Natsuno is highly observant and intelligent. He’s the first to realize that vampires have infiltrated the village and later helps planning the humans’ counterattack, showing he’s fairly cunning for a teenager. His standoffish nature is useful in dangerous situations, as he’s able to keep calm under pressure. After the initial freak out, he hardly ever drops the cold demeanor when dealing with shiki. He’s also quite brave - one shiki explains that Natsuno is a threat not because he learned of their existence, but because he’s someone who won’t hide or run away from it, and would rather try to hunt them.
He’s very persistent once motivated and if he has his mind set, almost nothing can dissuade him from his goals. When pushed too far, this determination can turn into ruthlessness (as shown in a later canon point, after he turns into a shiki and decides they must all be annihilated, himself included). He keeps investigating the shiki despite the risk, and the only reason he stops is because he finds out Tohru became one of them. Tohru’s death was what pushed him to take action in the first place - he didn’t care about the mysterious deaths before. But after seeing his best friend rise, Natsuno can’t bring himself to hurt him and loses all will to fight - instead he asks Tohru to run away with him and when that fails, he lets Tohru feed on him until he dies.
Which brings us to who Natsuno really is, deep down: loyal to a fault. Besides Tohru there are also Kaori and Akira, two sibling Natsuno’s befriends after Tohru’s death and treats with brotherly-like protectiveness. After he’s bitten, his first action is to tell them to stay away from him and try to force them to leave Sotoba, fearing they'd be next. He keeps an eye on them even after he turns into a shiki, thus saving their lives. Natsuno doesn’t connect with others easily, but once he does they earn a caring, trusted friend. He isn’t concerned with the bigger picture, but will go to extreme (sometimes outright suicidal) lengths for a goal he believes in or someone he cares about. For that sake he will throw away his own well being in a heartbeat, without regret.
